![]() ![]() In basically stripping away all the comforts the hero took for granted, the hero reveals to him or herself what truly makes them strong inside and then have to rebuild. “The hero gets really hit hard, and then the story becomes about how the hero gets back up again and better and stronger than ever. “My favorite movies are ‘The Empire Strikes Back,’ ‘The Wrath of Khan,’” David said. Rob David, vice president of content creative at Mattel Television, practically confirms this with his comments regarding the backlash: And, despite the crushing failure of He-Man (and his alter-ego, Prince Adam), the series is clearly building up the character for a triumphant comeback. Thus far, only the first 5 episodes of Masters of the Universe: Revelation are available on Netflix, with the second half of the season yet to be released. But that doesn’t mean that He-Man is out of the picture - angry fans who assume that this series marks the end of the character’s dominance in the franchise might want to wait for an inevitable plot twist before getting emotional. ![]() Ironically, the success of the She-Ra reboot likely influenced the decision to focus the new He-Man series on Teela. Somehow, the fact that the new series was obviously aimed at young girls, not middle-aged men seeking solace in fond childhood memories and early hormonal stirrings, didn’t diminish the level of vitriol. Amusingly, a small (but incredibly vocal) segment of the fanbase despised the new character design for She-Ra, on the basis that it just wasn’t sexy enough for their tastes. In fact, the He-Man franchise has already undergone a similar controversy, after Netflix rebooted the spin-off series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, starring He-Man’s twin sister, for a modern audience. We’ve seen this same story play out many times before, most notably, in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the Ghostbusters reboot, in which the most vicious, hateful criticisms drown out whatever reasonable concerns fans might have, and the conversation devolves into a fiery culture war. The familiar controversy marks the return of a seemingly never-ending cycle, in which a beloved older franchise is rebooted, and given a progressive polish more in tune with today’s sensibilities, infuriating an extremely online segment of the fanbase who often feel betrayed, disappointed, or even pushed away by the shift in focus. “I know there’s some people that are like, ‘Hey, man, this show’s woke.’ I’m like, all right, great, then so was the original cartoon we’re f**king sequel-izing. ![]()
